Nitrous Oxide Sedation
The idea of paying a visit to the dentist brings
stress to some patients, especially those who have a history of bad experiences
and oral health issues. Dental Sedation is an effective and safe way to quell
phobia and anxiety during your visit to the dentist. Spring Valley, NY cosmetic
dentist Dr. Alan Pressman understands the patients' fear and utilizes the most
advanced sedation dentistry methods, offering absolute comfort before, during,
and after the procedures.
Nitrous oxide (N2O), more commonly referred to as laughing gas,
is a mild sedative agent that
safely and effectively manages pain and anxiety during dental
treatment. The colorless and odorless nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and
inhaled through a small mask that fits over your
nose. Patients are asked to breathe normally and should feel the
effects of the laughing gas within minutes.
Contrary to its name, laughing gas does not necessarily make you
laugh. The nitrous oxide slows down your nervous system to make you feel less
inhibited. You may feel light-headed, tingly, or even heaviness in your arms or
legs. Ultimately, you should be calm and comfortable throughout the procedure.
You might even giggle a time or two.

Inhaled Sedation
Your dentist, Alan Pressman DMD will administer the
nitrous oxide before the procedure via a mask placed over the nose. It
continues to administer throughout the whole procedure. Dr. Pressman, along
with the staff, monitors and adjusts the level of sedation as required.
Nitrous oxide keeps the patient calm and relaxed
during the procedure while remaining coherently awake to follow the
instructions given by the dentist. After the procedure, the nitrous oxide is
turned off, and its effects wear off instantly.
Quick Results
You'd be surprised at how quickly laughing gas
begins to sedate you and allow you to relax in the dental office. The effects
start to set in almost immediately, giving you the comfort needed for any dental
procedures your dentist may recommend. While other forms of sedation may take
several hours, such as oral sedation, or require longer recovery times, such as
IV sedation, laughing gas is fast and effective. The effects only take a few
minutes to set in after your dentist applied the mask to your nose. After
procedures have been completed, the effects wear off just as fast as they set
in.
